UNDERSTANDING.

Detroit School Board Member Elena Herrada provides a brief history of education policy in Detroit:

In light of the recent complaint against duly elected Detroit school board members by the Attorney General, it is doubtful that most people in the cities under the Emergency Manager of Consent Agreements (suspended democracy) will have much reason to head to the polls. Each of the seven school board members were elected in an official election in November, 2011. We were elected to a four year term of office, despite the fact that we are under an emergency manager. We won a lawsuit against the Emergency Financial Manager just prior to this election for the right to govern academics, since the Emergency Financial Manager was put into place under the guise of fiscal emergency. Despite the fact that the EFM drove the school district into three times the debt we had been in prior to his appointment by democratic governor Granholm, the new governor, Snyder simply changed the law and removed the word "financial" from the overseer's title. He then appointed Emergency Manager Roy Roberts. Robert Bobb is out, Roy Roberts is in. Chaos reigns the week before school is to start.

An interesting twist here is that the elected school board members now have to answer to the Attorney General as to what right we have to be elected officials in Detroit Public Schools. The governor and friends created a separate and unequal district- the Educational Achievement Authority- for the "persistently low achieving schools" across the state. Only Detroit is in it. It is privately run, funded by federal and state money taken from Detroit Public Schools and has no collective bargaining agreements with anyone. It is "site based," meaning the principal has all power to hire, fire, decide who comes in. It is segregated by race, academic achievement (lowest 5%) and economic status. Because of the new district, Detroit Public Schools shrunk to half of its former size. The district was split in half on a racialized platform and thus, the public school district cannot justify having 11 elected board members.

This is similar to being raped, then murdered for not being a virgin.

Or maybe more like being looted by the state, then taken over for being broke.

Perhaps the people who collected 250,000 signatures to repeal Public Act 4 can understand the new Jim Crow North. The signatures were simply set aside for a variety of false reasons that even the most polyanna voter would dispute. Voting in Michigan is now for the rich cities only.

Maybe that's why there is so little evidence of an election here.

ACTION!!!

As we discussed earlier, we need people to gather on the first day of
school. We will have to perhaps bring our own seats, tables, books and whatever else the students will need. We are relying on teachers to let us know this. Perhaps we can ask others to support us by bringing people to surround the school so that the children will be able to go in.

We need to let the people who have been moved into the school what they are doing by occupying a rare school with offices that can be found anywhere. We must appeal to the good conscience of all people. Most people, I believe, would not be complicit in denying education to the most vulnerable students. We have to let them know the story.

So let's get to work. Given our busy schedules, I can tell you that mine is open late in the evening or early in the morning. We can meet anywhere. We can meet at the school. Let's get bust on this so we are well organized and prepared for the first day of school and restore some order and harmony to our students' lives.

My number is 313 974 0501. I would like some basic lessons in signing so we can communicate better. Thank you so much for teaching so much tonight! You are an inspiration to all of us and I am so grateful to be part of your efforts!

Thank you
